STORY TIME
My name is Kassie Dyes, and I was an odd little child. Huge heart, old soul. I was 9 years old when I first had the desire to learn how to sew. My parents thought it was a phase so they bought me this used, no name, white plastic sewing machine. I took sewing lessons every Wednesday after school from a family friend. I spent years making gifts, taking on little jobs, and I was loving every second of it. I never liked getting patterns from the store though. I would sit there with the big McCalls book opened in front of me, flipping through the pages, wishing I could mix four different patterns together to make what I really wanted. So I did. This is how I first became a designer.
I loved to sew. Period. It calmed me. I could rest my forehead on my industrial Juki I had in my room. It hummed with life as I sewed for hours and hours.
I spent years making clothes for myself, and when I was 15 I started working as a contract sewer for a company that manufactures martial arts belts. Through high school I got a second job working at a quilting store in Lockport, IL. Despite the fact that I was at least 15 years younger then anyone else working there, I used my time learning about textiles, sewing machines, and spending way too much money on fabric.
I moved from Chicago, to Philadelphia PA, where I attended Philadelphia University, formally, Philadelphia College of Textiles and Sciences. Growing up in Chicago everyone asked me, why Philadelphia? Well Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science, is the oldest textile school in the nation and one of the only ones left. I loved the idea of being able to collaborate with textile designers to perfectly create all of the ideas rolling around in my head. My four years there were challenging and wonderful, and I was especially grateful for the relationship I had with my professors which allowed me to learn and grow so much more.
I graduated May of 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design. Earlier that spring I was awarded the Neiman Marcus award for the most Salable Collection. Feeling insecure about my abilities most of my life, this finally gave me the feeling that it wasn't all for nothing. All the sleepless nights, the days upon days in the studio, and way too many cups of coffee, proved to be worth it.
With that award, and my enthusiastic outlook on life through the beauty of fashion, I started Clove & Larkspur. First I worked out of the living room of my one bedroom apartment I shared with two other girls. It was a mess, 100 degress, we all hated it. Since moving to Murfreesboro, TN we went from the back of a retail space to having our own studio!
Clove & Larkspur has become a team of talented volunteers, made up of friends and family, who all believe in the possibilities that lay ahead. We love espresso, tea, flowers, and life. Creating something out of nothing is humbling and inspiring, and on those days when not a thing is planned and something beautiful grows we know that we are taking another step forward.
Darling, lets be adventurers.
